I'm trying to install a free VU meter plugin called FreeG by Sonalksis. I've set the VST folder in Studio One but it doesn't show up in the effects list.
I installed the Sonalksis plugin manager which includes FreeG and lots of other plugin trials. FreeG is the only one that's unlocked. (The others are paid.)

You said you were 'trying to install it'. Did the install complete?

Yes it installed. I can't test it because it's not stand-alone, it needs a VST host. It just doesn't show up in the Studio One effects list.
I'm confused about the versions of FreeG. Some people say to just download the plugin, which is just a single file, (a .dll.) After Studio One failed to see it, I uninstalled it then downloaded and installed the 'Plugin Mangager' by Sonalksis which includes FreeG along with a bunch of other demos (you have to pay for the other demos but not FreeG) but Studio One failed to see it.
I also tried another VU meter but again, Studio One can't see it either.

If you know of a free VU meter that's confirmed to work with Studio One, please let me know.

Are you using 32 bit or 64 bit?

All of those plugs work fine here (Win 7 64) in both x86 and x64. I just let the install manager install them and they all showed up. The x64 versions are shown below.
Free G is handy because my other free meter, TT Dynamic Range, is x86 only.

I got it installed (FreeG version 3.0.2.0) and now I can use it in Studio One. I had the 32 bit version which won't work with 64 bit version of Studio One. I used the Sonalksis 'Program Manager' application to install the 64 bit version and the .dll is in: C:Program FilesVstplugins.
One thing though, there's a padlock icon on top of the .dll icon. Does this mean that it's a trial?
The web site says:
To use the Version 3 plug-ins in 64 bit mode you will require a 64 bit licence. You can upgrade all your licences to 64 bit licences for a one-off upgrade fee of €55 (Europe) or $75 (ROW) from within the Upgrade Centre.
Alternatively, if you purchase new plug-in(s) from the Online Store then all your existing licences will be automatically upgraded to 64 bit licences.
