Key detection utility that find the key chords and tempo of a song or sample in realtime

HoRNet SongKey MK3 is the all new third version of our key finder plugin, but it doesn’t do simple key recognition, it’s also capable of detect the chord being played and the song tempo. We thought it was a good idea to also add MIDI input (to be able to detect chords and key of midi tracks) and MIDI output for the recognised chords so you can record them and edit the track for your own needs.

At the core of SongKey we find the “chromagram” (a level representation of the intensity of each note playing in the song) but we spent a lot of time creating a more reliable and cleaner chromagram than the one of the previous version.

The data extracted from the audio is used to feed an artificial intelligence unit that is used to detect each chord, and SongKey MK3’s chord detection extends to sevenths, fifths and suspended chords.

The new key detection engine builds on the chromagram and expands it with another unit based around a statistical chord progression model that analysing the chord sequence is able to understand the key of the song, this has the great advantage that the key recognition is always realtime so you can change song without the need to reset the plugin, or if the song changes key in some part of it, the plugin will simply be able to detect the new chord sequence and follow the key change.

The all new GUI is completely vector drawn and resizable, so it’ll look good on any screen and can be made smaller or bigger as needed.

SongKey is very useful in those situation in which you don’t have an instrument at hand to find out the key of a song you are working on or if you are a DJ and want to make a mash up but you don’t know in which key a song is written. The chord detection feature gives you insights on the chord progression of the song so that you can better design your bass lines and pads.

Have you ever dropped a vocal, drum loop or even a one-shot sample into your music; and even though the sample is the correct BPM, it just doesn’t sound right? I’m guessing your answer is a resounding, yes.

Let’s take a look as to why this happens.

In simple terms, it’s most likely because the key and scale or pitch of your sample doesn’t match the rest of the song.

Let’s say, for example, that your song is in A minor. The key and scale of A minor is comprised of the notes/pitches A, B, C, D, E, F and G. If we added a drum sound which had a note/pitch of F#, then it would sound odd in the composition. This is because F# is not a note/pitch which is in the key and scale of A minor.

You can apply this rule to complex samples too, such as vocals. Rather than there being one wrong note, there would most likely be several contained within the sample which don’t fit.

Spot The Difference

Here’s a clip of a song with a drum percussion hit added which is out of key.

It sounds weird and incompatible, right?

Now, here’s the same clip, but we’ve tuned the drum percussion sample to a note which is part of the same key and scale as the rest of the song. In this example the song is G Major, so we’ve tuned the percussion hit to G.

The 2nd clip sounds much better and fitting, hopefully you agree!

G is the root note of the G Major scale. We aren’t limited to tuning to the root note though, we could also use A, B, C, D, E, and F♯ in the case of G Major. That said, some notes will work better than others.

Find The Key

We’ve established the cause of this problem when making music, but what’s the solution – how do I find the key of a sample?

One option is to learn to tune by ear. This is by no means an easy task and is often impossible to learn. Years of ear training and playing musical instruments is the usual path for someone looking to tune music by ear. Or, if you’re very lucky you might be pitch-perfect.

Another option, which is more straightforward and offers instant results, is to use a key detection VST or plugin in your DAW.
