What better way to add some embellishments to your songs than with an orchestral plugin? Even better if its free, right?
Orchestral samples, and samples in general, have come a long way.
/free-vst-sampler-osx.html. They were practically unusable back in the day, but now, even though you can hear the difference between a sample software and the real deal, they sound astoundingly similar.
I love finding free software that actually works, so in this post I will go into each of the ones I found and tried, this way you won’t have to do any of the research and try the ones that sucked, like I did!

Best Free Full Orchestra VSTs
While every single one on this list is a good plugin overall, there are two which stand out.
Layers by Orchestral Tools
Layers is an ultra realistic orchestral sample library that features a full orchestra, Brass-, Woodwinds-, and Strings sections.
Free Vst Plugins For Garageband Download
Beauty plus app free download for jio phone. You can choose between a couple different mic positions and it also features different articulations; different chord types, staccato and sustain unison, and more.
In total, the sample pack is about 17GB and runs on Windows 10 and Mac OS.
Lastly, Layers works with Orchestral Tools’ SINE Player.

Total Composure Orchestra (Windows, Mac, Linux)
Total Composure Orchestra is a full orchestral sample library created using only samples in the public domain.
Total Composure is the first to offer such a library exclusively for the Kontakt format; making use of Kontakt’s scripting capabilities to greatly enhance the playability, realism, and functionality of these public domain samples.
This is a fantastic plugin, it comes with a huge array of instruments from pianos, to brass instruments, strings and percussion.
One bad thing about this plugin is that it runs both on Kontakt Player, which is free, and the full version of Kontakt, but on Kontakt player you can only use the samples for about 30 min before it stops working.
If you want to be able to use them to their fullest extent, you will need to purchase Kontakt.

Spitfire LABS
I mentioned Spitfire in a couple of my posts simply because they have some of my top recommendations as far as free plugins go.
LABS is basically a collection of free VST and AU plugins that not only sound fantastic, but that is also being updated consistently, with new plugins being added over time.
Here you will find great-sounding samples of any orchestral instrument you can think of.

The Free Orchestra by Project Sam
Project Sam is behind Symphobia, which is one of the best-rated libraries for film scoring, video games and TV, and they created the Free Orchestra library which contains bits and pieces of all of their paid products.
What struck me the most about this free library is how great it sounds as soon as you load it up; there is little to no tweaking required.
Now, it runs on KONTAKT (6.2. or higher), but luckily it works in the free version which can be beneficial to you if you’re interested in using KONTAKT but don’t want to purchase the premium version just yet.
Parameters such as envelope controls, effects, octaver, and reverse make this library very versatile to use.
All in all, if you’re a beginner tipping their toes into the whole orchestral world, this entry level library could just be what you need.

DSK Overture Orchestra (Windows)
DSK Overture is a full orchestral sample VST plugin.
It gives you the ability to choose between 40 different instruments and play 4 of those instruments in the same instance, through MIDI.
The included instruments are; Acoustic Piano, Harpsichord, Bassoon, Celesta, Glockenspiel, Vibes, Harp, Flute, Piccolo, English Horns, Oboe, Clarinet, French Horn, Trumpet, Church Organ, Trombone, Tuba, Cello, Contra Bass, Viola, Violin, Orchestra Drum Kit, Full Sections.
Honestly, what makes this plugin great is the variety of instruments, since there is no shortage of them, plus they all sound pretty damn good!

BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover by Spitfire Audio
Here’s another great addition by Spitfire.
The BBC Symphonic Orchestra Discover actually sells for $49, but you can fill out a form and they will send it to you after 14 days for completely free.
This library is clearly aimed at beginners since it is very simple to use and straight-forward, plus it already comes premixed into one mix signal which gives you less control over it, but makes things easier if you’re just starting out.
It features a total of 33 instruments and 47 techniques, and thanks to Spitfire’s new mode switching technology, you can share and collaborate with fellow composers, regardless of which edition they own.

One Track Orchestra (Windows)
One Track orchestra is primarily a sketching tool, meant to be used for songwriting and recording demos and aimed mostly at beginners and songwriters who need a simple tool to create and record music.
Therefore, the sound quality and usability aren’t the best ones out there.
The plugin was created using samples from VSCO Community Edition and assembled with Maize Sampler.
It is available as 32-bit & 64-bit VST plugin for Windows.

Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra (Windows)
The Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra Module contains the full SSO by Mattias Westlund, in one simple VST plugin (32 & 64bit)
The SSO samples are stereo, 16 bit, 44kHz.
While it’s not the most professional Orchestral Sample Plugin out there, it will certainly provide the building blocks for creating some astounding virtual orchestra sounds.
Melodic instruments and chromatic percussion are sampled in minor 3rds and all samples have varying amounts of stage ambience, depending on their front-to-back placement.
SSO is the one plugin on this list that provides the highest number of instruments.
You get loads of String instruments, Brass instruments, Woodwind instruments, Keys and Choirs, Chromatic Percussion and Regular Percussion.

DSK Virtuoso (Windows)
DSK Virtuoso allows you to play a combination of 6 layer instruments, or to play a composition up to 6 different parts, through the MIDI channels selectors.

The reason I like these kinds of plugins so much is that you can create complete song just by using virtual instruments.
You will need a good MIDI controller to do this properly and fast, even though you can manually add in every note in your DAW.

- FilterJam: This audio unit plugin has been designed and developed by a company called AudioThing. It works like magic when it comes to enhancing or highlighting certain sections of your song. The knobs also assist in editing and mixing. FilterJam is a multi-band resonant filter that has a big knob for adjusting frequency. The other knobs dedicated to mixing are Emphasis, Gain, and Mix. When it comes to synth sounds, these effects take up a crucial role in adjusting the brightness or depth of the tone in question. - AbleTunes Drive Knob: The AbleTunes Drive Knob is a simple music effect that adds heavy distortion to the track it is applied to. It is mainly used to add a great deal of bite to percussion loops as well as drummer tracks. Especially the drum kicks can be heavily ramped up by increasing the drive. The throbbing effect that it produces is commonly used in the rock and metal genres. Designed by AbleTunes, the Drive knob is one of the three free audio unit plugins that are widely used by composers and music producers around the world.
- AbleTune Attack Knob: Another one of the three Attack AbleTunes audio unit plugins that can be downloaded and installed into GarageBand for free is the Attack knob. It works as a stereo transient shaper that affects the attack section of a waveform. Suggestive from the name, this effect mainly caters to the highest points of a sound wave by adding some punch. This effect can be best noticed when used on stringed instruments but is conventionally used on drum loops. If you want to experiment with this plugin, try using it on stringed instruments to give them an extra push to the front of your mix.
- AbleTune Space Knob: The Space knob is the last of the three AbleTunes audio unit plugins. It is not as complicated as the other two knobs and simply adds room reverb when the knob is twisted clockwise and vice versa. As the knob controls reverb settings, it can be used with tracks and audio recordings of all kinds. If you want to understand the dynamics of the plugin, you can try twisting and turning the knob on a simple acoustic guitar track. The Space Knob, when used together with the Attack and Drive Knobs, creates a unique effect that is much needed for your song to stand out of the box. There is no perfect combination that you can refer to. You need to cater to the requirements of the song to create that symmetric balance.
- LABS: LABS is recognized as one of the best plugin software for any digital audio workstation including GarageBand. It started as an experiment with sound waves to generate unique effects by Spitfire Audio. What started out with just one synthesizer and produced sleighbell sounds has been transformed into 23 virtual instruments. Some of them include modular piano, synth pads, dulcimer, pedal pads, etc. LABS has been used by Hans Zimmer, one of the greatest music composers alive, in several of his projects. The richness and depth of sound are incomparable.
- Synth- PG-8X: If you are looking for a classical synthesizer that has all of the retro tunes and styles in it, this is your audio plugin to go to. The PG – 8X was essentially developed to simulate Roland keyboards and music style. The 80s and 90s funk, rock, and blues tones are the most used ones of this plugin. Along with tones comes a huge virtual mixer that allows you to transform the music you are making. Right from pitch correction to reverb to treble and audio gain, the PG – 8X synth has it all and much more. It also focuses a great deal on the richness of the tone to make sure it is thick and deep enough.
- Clap Machine: The Clap Machine lets you create a live audience within a few seconds literally by turning a few knobs. This audio unit plugin finds a lot of use outside of the music industry as well. American sitcoms in the 90s extensively used this feature to input audience claps after every punchline. The clap machine is also used sometimes when editing recordings of live shows by top artists to give the audience a volume boost. The four knobs attached to the plugin’s interface are Attack, release, volume, and reverb. You can also produce finger snap sounds that are extensively used in acoustic numbers.
- PitchProof: Pitch proof is a Digital Whammy Pedal used by guitarists (both lead and bassists). Suggestive from the name, the main function of this pedal is to control the pitch of the audio. Developed by Aegean Music, this audio-plugin can be downloaded for free from the Aegean Music website and imported onto GarageBand. A simple correlation to understand this effect is the pitch bend slider of a keyboard. You can create extremely funky beats and sounds by pulling up and stretching out the pitch of an audio track. The two knobs present on the interface are Blend and Detune. While the Blend option mellows down the tone, the Detune knob completely distorts the pitch. It might seem bizarre to put in effect in practice but accidental notes are essentially a culmination of intentionally playing off-tune notes in a song.
Plugins can be easily installed in GarageBand from several websites. Here are the steps to install a plugin:
- Click on the MAC AU file and download the zip version.
Keep the downloaded file on the desktop to be able to drop it into the library later. - Once the download is complete, double click on the Zip file.
- Now go to ‘settings’ on the top left-hand side, and click on “GO” on your computer’s home screen.
- During this part, press-hold the “options” key on your keyboard to bring up “library” in the drop-down menu.
- Next, find the “audio” folder in the “library”. Open up the “Plug-ins” folder within and double click on the “Components” file.
- This way the downloaded plugin is on your home screen, and you can simply drag and drop the component into the “Components” file.
- The new plug-in can be found in the Smart Control’s plug-in settings in GarageBand. However, before that, restart your computer, to ensure the downloaded file opens up easily.
- Once the computer restarts, open up GarageBand.
- Go to the Smart Controls to see the installed plug-ins.
- Click on the Available plugins, to see all the newly-installed plugins.
